Unfolding Data Stories with Cogni.zone

Transforming Data for Better Insights

Cognizone, a semantic technology consulting firm based in Brussels, has spent the last decade transforming complex data into clear, interconnected systems and graphs. Their work allows organizations to maximise the data potential through their better understanding, connecting, and utilisation. As a data-startup innovating with Greek tax authorities they are leveraging semantic technology to streamline public sector processes.

At Stone Soup, we had the pleasure of catching up with Dimitrios Perperidis and the Greek team from Cognizone (CZ) to hear about their latest achievements since joining Stone Soup in 2023.

Data-Startup Innovating with Greek Tax Authorities

Cognizone marked its entry into Greece through a groundbreaking collaboration with the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (IAPR, or AADE). This project harnesses linked open data and semantic web technologies to create a state-of-the-art application ecosystem designed to support IAPR’s legislative and regulatory processes. The system revolutionizes navigation and understanding of Greece’s intricate fiscal and taxation legal framework, setting a new benchmark for clarity and efficiency in legal and regulatory management.

Improving Workforce Mobility with the ESCO Classification

The company works with high-profile clients like the DG-Employment, ETF, European Parliament, EC Publications Office and the governments of Luxembourg and Switzerland. Another one of their important projects is the ESCO classification for the European Union’s DG Employment. This classification standardizes job roles and skills across EU member states, aiming to support greater job mobility across the continent. It’s an essential and innovative tool for harmonizing labour markets, making it easier for workers to move and for employers to find the talent they need.

A Startup That Cannot Fail

Dimitrios explained to us, “If we mess up the data, an entire mission critical platform or EU website could go down.” This highlights the level of responsibility and precision Cognizone delivers—ensuring that the data they manage is not just correct but flawlessly integrated into the larger ecosystem.

In fact, what Cognizone does is unique—not just in Greece but across Europe. There’s no other company in the EU quite like them, especially in the legislative sector where the stakes are so high.

Work Opportunities Today; the LoopCV Perspective

From Frustration to Innovative Prospects

It all began four years ago, when one of the LoopCV co-founders struggled in an unfulfilling job. However, as he realized, in order to find the best work opportunities out there, he had to spend a disproportionate amount of time and effort in job applications. In other words, he experienced, firsthand, the need for a more efficient approach to job-seeking. Drawing on his programming expertise, he developed a rudimentary version of LoopCV, setting in motion a journey fueled by innovation and a deep desire for change.

Interview with BRF: an NGO for people on the move

How to Empower People on the Move

At Stone Soup we are happy to cowork with Boat Refugee Foundation. BRF assists and empowers people on the move or stuck in remote parts of Europe. Vicky, manager of the Athens program, talked to us about the ways the Netherlands-based NGO works.

BRF operates two programs in Greece. The one in Lesvos provides medical and psychosocial support. The one in Athens provides psychological support and group empowering activities to adult refugees & migrants, while it provides advocacy for a fairer asylum policy.

BRF’s goal is to motivate, empower, inform and link people on the move. The team consists of a psychologist, a social worker and a volunteer mental health professional. It offers various forms of psychosocial support, helping service users to take control of their lives and claim their rights.

IS IT TABOO TO ASK FOR ASSISTANCE?

“Many BRF beneficiaries who come from different cultures and backgrounds are not familiar with western terms like “mental health”. By pointing out the importance of self-care we try to destigmatize the seek for support.  Therefore, we work together with the service users on the life skills and resources they could develop to cope with difficulties, to feel more empowered and to make the first steps towards personal recovery”

HELPING THE HELPERS!

We know that BRF trains members of other NGOs, since we’ve seen them organize training events in our officesAs Vicky explained, the aim is to introduce basic mental health and psychosocial concepts to also empower non-mental-health professionals operating in the field. In this light, we connect them with practices and resources that increase their awareness helping them approach relevant cases more effectively.

HOW DOES COWORKING HELP?

Although we have a private office, we feel part of a bigger community with a variety of professionals around us. As a result, we both decompress while we connect with people from completely different areas. Observing their work and problem-solving routines can be of great support to us. It offers new ways to approach decisions concerning your own work and see things from a different angle”.

Food Sustainability: What’s all the hype about?

Lately there is a buzz around food sustainability. But what exactly does the term mean? Simply put, food sustainability is all about producing food in a way that protects the environment, makes efficient use of natural resources, ensures that farmers can support themselves, and enhances the quality of life in communities that produce food.

Joe’s contribution to a greener economy

Joe, one of our newest Stone Soupers, explains how sustainability can help us build a greener future. During our conversation, we found out what fascinates him about Athens, and, in return,we got some advice on how we can minimize food waste at home or in the office.

Joe was studying in the University of Cambridge, when a Greek friend shared some intriguing stories about life in Athens. Years later, he jumped on the opportunity to take a long break from life in London, and explore the city he’d heard so much about. Joe’s pursuit for new, sunnier experiences, brought him to Athens, and Stone Soup.

Warmer weather… Warmer people?

Even in winter, Joe still seems excited about the climate of our city. One of the things he’s been enjoying in Athens is that although it’s a vibrant and busy metropolis, people are much more relaxed and easy-going compared to Londoners. He also seems a bit intrigued by the many cafés in Athens that offer sidewalk seating, which, to him, makes the urban landscape seem more welcoming and warm.

food sustainability; sharing is caring

Sustainability: The only way forward

Joe follows the entire food production process, from the first stages of farming until it finally reaches our table. He actually is the one who makes sure that the right choices are made so that a greener approach is guaranteed.

Since the field is relatively new and frequently confusing, Joe was happy to clarify some terms: He explained that his duties are mostly pertinent to data gathering and analysis. That way, he can ensure that all kinds of waste (energy, resource or produce), are minimized.

Sharing really is caring!

An interesting link between food sustainability and the mentality of co-working spaces emerged while talking to Joe. At first they may not seem that relevant but a closer look highlights a common goal: They both focus on ways to reduce waste.

Co-working spaces offer shared spaces, energy and resources: They clearly value the importance of waste reduction! So, since we also care about the issue at hand, we asked the expert: Joe shared some hacks and tips on how we can decrease food waste in our own kitchen. We already tried some of them, and if you do too, you can share your experience with us, and make Joe proud with your sustainable cooking skills!
